Rachel barely survived a brutal massacre that left all of her friends murdered. A year later, her close friends are spending Spring Break in a secluded house in the woods, and they have cordially invited her to join. Once Rachel and her friends arrive at the cabin, the partying, sex, and…terror begins. Can Rachel survive another bloody massacre?

Rachel (Callie Ott) sits, caked in blood, alone under a single overhead light, in the interrogation room of a police station. Silhouetted behind a two-way mirror a pair of detectives look at their captive and ponder what might have happened to her. What is going through her head?

Peter Herro’s new film WTF is a loving homage to the slasher films of the 80’s that knows what it is, reveling in its sanguine filth. Everything that you would expect in an 80’s slasher movie. There’s horny teenagers, pot, endless drinking, nudity, constant banter about sex, and a mysterious killer that is bent on slicing flesh to see ruby red blood spill from mutilated flesh.

The set up is even comically stereotypical. A nebbish girl named Rachel has survived a nasty mass murder. After three years her horny, but well-meaning friends, decide it is time to pull her out of her shell and help her heal. They invite her along for a spring break vacation in a remote, but surprisingly accommodated home deep in the middle of BFE nowhere.

The clan of characters arrive at the home and the sex romp begins. The whole time, Rachel is uneasy, haunted by her past experiences with parties and death and such. Everything is going fine until nightfall. Then things get crazy. The bodies pile up and the cast of young actors has the time of their lives, it seems, being picked off and screaming at each other about survival tactics. Of course, we still have to find out who the killer is, why this is happening again, or will anyone survive?

Peter Herro and writers Adam Buchalter and Christopher Lawrence Centanni know the rules of the slasher genre and play with expectations in this silly, gory, sexy little thriller. Yes, the characters are all painfully unlikable aside from Rachel, yet you can’t take your eyes off of them because you know the blood will start flowing soon enough. When it does there are some delightfully icky surprises.

Steve Parker‘s editing keeps the film moving at an elegant clip with a clear understanding of the rhythms of a scene or body of scenes. Sabrina Castro‘s make-up effects are worthy of the big-budget studio efforts and are just and groan-inducing and squirm-worthy. Credit must also be give to Herro for offering an original tone to the self-aware slasher pic. Like Scream but with more of an edge, WTF is a frat party of blades, blood, and entrails that is worth a look.
