FUGUE, the latest feature from acclaimed director Agnieszka Smoczynska, is set to make its North American debut in March. The film explores the complex themes of identity, memory, and motherhood, and has already garnered widespread critical acclaim for its powerful storytelling and exceptional performances.

FUGUE follows the story of Alicja, a woman who has rebuilt her life after suffering from memory loss. Despite her newfound freedom, Alicja’s past catches up with her when she is forced to return to her former family and assume her role as a wife, mother, and daughter. However, her estranged husband and son do not recognize the woman she has become, and Alicja must navigate feelings of alienation, love, and self-discovery as she struggles to reclaim her identity.

Through Alicja’s story, FUGUE tackles the social taboos surrounding motherhood and the pressure on women to accept maternity without question. The film questions the assumption that every woman should be willing to become a mother simply because she has the biological capacity to give birth, and offers a nuanced exploration of the complexities of motherhood.
