Finally, something has united all of humanity: not being able to leave the house due to a global pandemic. Yeah, it’s not exactly ideal. But you know what has always united humanity? HORROR FILMS. They simultaneously prey on our worst fears and provide a sense of relief, regardless of where you are in the world. Thankfully, Netflix has got us covered, so here are the top 10 horror films currently streaming that’ll (hopefully) make the quarantine go a bit faster.

Outbreak (1995)

Okay, this one is kind of obvious, but if you’re looking for a theme for your circumstances, Outbreak is a perfect choice. The film speculates how far military agencies might go to contain a deadly, rapidly-spreading virus, and is based loosely off of a real Ebola outbreak at the time.

Child’s Play (1988)

Viewers who want a break from the constant reminder of a global pandemic can have a nice palette cleanser about a homicidal doll possessed by a dead serial killer. And it’s the OG version from 1988!

Cabin Fever (2002)

Switching back to our virus theme, Eli Roth takes a “stab” at the subgenre with more gore, which ultimately launched his career. Five college grads rent a cabin in the backwoods of North Carolina, who fall victim to a flesh-eating virus AND the local murderers.

The Evil Dead (1981)

Although fans are generally more partial to its sequel, the original Evil Dead is always a favorite. The legendary Bruce Campbell and the touches of comedy and camp makes it an arguably “feel-good” horror film. And boy, we need to feel something good right now.

Candyman (1992)

Although we’re looking forward to Jordan Peele’s remake of Candyman, the original is a staple in the slasher genre, where a skeptic grad student accidentally summons a murderous soul—played by the legendary Tony Todd—with a hook for a hand.

Hush (2016)

If you think YOU get paranoid while being trapped in your house, imagine how the protagonist of Hush feels: she’s a deaf and mute writer living in a secluded home in the woods, and is being terrorized by a masked killer. And it is TRULY paranoia-inducing. Have fun!

Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

Another classic palette cleanser and one of the best films on the list, period. Roman Polanski elevated horror to another level with his film about a young woman who is pregnant with the Antichrist, thanks to her husband and satanic neighbors. And you can watch it RIGHT NOW.

The VVitch (2016)

The haunting portrait of a shunned Puritan family who experience numerous tragedies, and accuse their eldest daughter of witchcraft. Their sanity partially unravels due to their isolation, which is something we can all relate to currently. Now then, why are all my crops failing?

Ravenous (Les affamés) (2018)

This Canadian film follows a small village in Quebec, which is terrorized by a flesh-eating plague that breaks peoples’ bodies down and turns them against their loved ones.

It’s quiet, yet effective. Just like the country it comes from.

Train to Busan

While the other films are in no particular order, we couldn’t NOT make this film #1 on this list given the film’s quality and the fitting circumstances. The film follows a group of passengers trapped on a speeding train in the midst of a zombie outbreak, and the quarantine zone in Busan is their only hope.

About the Author

From humble beginnings as a bisexual art kid who drank more coffee than a 40-year-old author, Remy now holds a BFA in Film Production from Chapman University and is a proud member of the HorrorBuzz team (and still a bisexual art kid who drinks too much coffee). They were first introduced to the world of horror and camp when their grandma showed them The Rocky Horror Picture Show at age 5, and never looked back. When they're not writing cartoons or working on movies, one can spot them in various clubs around Los Angeles performing very, very self-deprecating standup comedy. Howdy ho!
