The day started bright and early with all the little ghouls and boys eagerly waiting to get into the first day of ScareLA at the Pasadena Convention Center.  Outside sat a larger-than-life inflated pumpkin that beckoned visitors to come inside.  Cosplayers and haunt fans alike were milling about the foyer long before the doors to the scare floor opened.

Inside, the scare floor was a buzz with early entry and exhibitors getting their first look at things.

EXPERIENCES

What sets ScareLA apart from any other Halloween convention are the mini versions of haunts that terrify guests during the haunt season.  This year there were several unique things to enjoy.  Here are our thoughts.

Drunken Devil

This walkthrough delivered by the devilish Matt Dorado, had atmosphere a plenty.  Low lighting, heavy haze, and surpassingly spacious corridors lent this attraction a very unique vibe.  The talent in this maze were particularly on point with French Louisiana accents luring passerby to their doom

ALONE

The crew at Alone @aloneexperience really know how to create an atmosphere of mystery.  So much so that at times the meanings are so dense, heady, and esoteric that you may be nothing but confused by the time you leave.

We had to first check in to the booth as normal.  We were then given a sheet of paper with instructions and a time to begin following the instructions. We were instructed to look for a black pod on the scare floor at 12:00pm.  Well we found it.

Pulled in, one at a time, we were each given instructions to go to the other side of the convention center and find a pink triangle.  Upon finding the sad pink triangle we queued up to be taken into the experience.

Taken in 30 at a time, we were instructed to hold hands and led into a dark room where multi colored lights flashed in an almost epileptic riot of color.  Standing in a half circle three actors stood on the opposite side of the room from us, clothed in white.  The actors began to deliver in audible dialogue with force and bravado as a low-thumping bass soundtrack filled the air.

Instructed to all lie down on the floor, we were all then covered by a large white sheet.  We listened as the actors continued and, one by one, we were each selected, and guided to enter a dark passageway at the far end of the room.

Entering the passage we each experienced our own mini walk through where we encounter shadowy figures, crawled on all fours through piles of straw, had ribbons tied to us, and more.

Always interesting, this experience was far more satisfying to ME than the recent Alone:Diffusion 

We all enjoyed it, though none of us really understood what the hell happened.

Field of Screams

Field of Screams delivered a nasty little experience involving an exorcism that gets a little out of hand.  Try this one out.  It was a lot of fun.

The Curse of the Devil Swamp

Lucas Acosta’s wonderful Curse of the Devil Swamp was a real treat at last years event.  This year, the young horror fiend has cooked up an even more detailed, immersive experience that delivers truly amazing scares and wonderful fun.  The layout for this maze is also ingenious as it confuses and disorients.  The only maze that we were able to loose ourselves in totally, this is a highlight.

Spooky Hallows

This delightful maze was filled with fantastic visual elements that really popped out at you as you walked by: both visually and physically. A quaint greenhouse turned into a horror show, and provided some fun scares…including one at the very end.

PANELS

There were quite a few panels that took place today, both announcing mazes for upcoming haunts, and letting guests learn some behind the scenes secrets.
