The critically acclaimed series Bitter Root is returning in February! The new story arc will kick off with issue number 6 and will feature the work of a new colorist, Sofie Dodgson. For those unfamiliar, Bitter Root is a new series that debuted in late 2018 from Image Comics and was subsequently nominated for a number of awards, namely the Eisner and the Ringo.  The story follows the Sangerye family, an estranged team of monster hunters who have to overcome their grievances in order to save New York from supernatural forces. What makes the series unique is its setting– the Harlem Renaissance is an underexplored backdrop for genre fiction, especially horror. The Jazz Age character designs and vibrant art give Bitter Root a distinct style that’s almost reminiscent of steampunk in the 20th century. What’s more, the series is being adapted for film by producer Ryan Coogler and Legendary! With Legendary’s track record for effects-heavy genre films, this seems like a natural fit.

The series’ artist, Sanford Greene, had this to say about the new story arc: “The anticipation of Bitter Root‘s return has been beyond exhilarating. We can’t wait for people to see where we are going with this story. I have never been more proud of a body of work.” That’s a huge endorsement, given Greene’s already impressive credits on Power Man and Iron Fist, Black Panther, and Royals.  However, it’s writer Chuck Brown’s comment that’s particularly intriguing: “I channeled my dark side for this arc. Hell has come to Harlem and I love it. We’re taking our antagonists to a new level.” Sounds like something that should pique any horror readers’ interest.

Bitter Root #6 will hit stores Wednesday, February 19th, and will also be available across all major digital distributors. In the meantime, you can get caught up on the first volume now.
