The anticipated Canadian horror flick Hellmington from writer/director Justin Hewitt-Drakulic and Alex Lee Williams has another piece of evidence to its mystery-thriller with a new clip. Genre icon, Michael Ironside (Total Recall), and Nicola Correia-Damude (Shadowhunters) star in what is being marketed as “this year’s Blair Witch Project“.

Synopsis: In 1999, outside the sleepy town of Hellmington, troubled high school senior Katie Owens mysteriously vanished. Nine years later, Detective Samantha Woodhouse, a former classmate of Katie’s, returns to Hellmington for the first time since graduation to deal with the unexpected death of her father. His passing just another tragedy in an already devastating year for Sam: her own daughter was murdered, resulting in a downward spiral of anguish and guilt that has slowly destroyed her marriage and career. Sam soon discovers that her father’s demise is one in a series of suspicious deaths over the last several years, and it appears that the grisly fatalities are becoming more frequent. Even more alarming, every victim circles back to the troubled Katie Owens. Battling hallucinations, insomnia and her own personal demons, Sam struggles to uncover the disturbing truth of what really happened to Katie Owens; a mystery that will lead her to a secretive, centuries-old cult of revenge.

It is big shoes to fill calling yourself the next Blair Witch Project, which stunned audiences with its found-footage style, compelling unknown actors, and its shoestring budget. Hellmington was reportedly made with a budget of only $1 million dollars, so in that case, they may have done the impossible if they created an amazing horror film without a big studio footing the bill. From the trailer, methinks me doth detect more of a Twin Peaks vibe, though perhaps Hellmington will be more cerebral and artsy than that Lynchian spectacle. Check out the official trailer here, and if you’re feeling extra jumpy the Hellmington team has released a clip to whet our appetites before the psychological, whodunnit feast:
