Horror movies are a pretty weird genre of movies if you think about it. Why do we enjoy watching something that we know will send shivers to our spines? Is the human brain made with the innate need for excitement that we just do not get enough of? Scientists are still trying to confirm this need to get stimulated from watching such scenes both at a physical and mental level. It is also fascinating to think that people were into this kind of genre before there were movies around.

Shark movies are one special type of horror movie that is not just a fad. This genre of shark movies was explored multiple times with varied results. Some of them have become a staple when it comes to horror movies while some of them are more funny than scary. No matter what you think, the fact is that this genre of shark movies has evolved pretty rapidly. The upcoming movie, The Black Demon, is a movie that promises to deliver everything this genre can offer.

Megalodon

Some people are always quick to forget just what kind of a beast the megalodon really is. One of the biggest fears that come across in this horror is from this gigantic shark. The creature could grow anywhere between 15 and 18 meters in length with  teeth up to 7 inches long that could swallow 2 humans side by side. Just imagine getting swallowed by such a wide mouth with no escape. Or getting chopped like a piece of meat with those teeth that come in multiple rows.

This prehistoric beast is the main antagonist that is referred to as The Black Demon. The legends tell a tale of this megalodon roaming around the seas of Brazil. One might scrub off this tale as a myth, but can you forget about it when you are there? Even if you tell yourself that it does not exist, can you be so sure when you are met with a dangerous situation? This kind of situation is no joke and the movie plans on delivering this fear in full motion.

The cast

The cast of a horror movie is very important because some actors are made for these movies and some are not. Josh Lucas will star in the movie as one of the main characters, Paul Sturges. There are only a few people who can express emotion the way Josh Lucas can as was demonstrated in American Psycho. Only top-notch performance is to be expected from such an actor for a horror movie.

Fernanda Urrejola also joins the cast as an actress that represents a certain strong presence. Her performance just keeps getting better and better which can be seen in movies such as Cry Macho and Narcos: Mexico. Julio Cesar Cedillo also joins the fray as a master of drama and action. The movies Sicario and Cowboys & Aliens prove his worth as an actor that can convey emotion perfectly in scenarios that are unknown to us.

The plot

Paul Sturges (Josh Lucas) takes his family on a nice vacation in Brazil while he has some work to be done there. The coastal town they go to has a legend of a fierce creature roaming in the waters, The Black Demon. What seems like a folk tale may not seem like wild imagination when the family finds themselves in a predicament. Paul goes to the nearby oil rig on a regular check-up, what could possibly go wrong here?

Paul and his whole family end up on the metal tower in the middle of the ocean. Oil rigs seem perfectly fine structures, but only in theory. Of course, oil rigs are safe, but are they the most pleasant thing to be on? How many times was also there an accident on an oil rig that resulted in something bad? Would you really like to be stuck there with your family while the megalodon could be out there? Do not forget that such a creature could easily bite off anything including the rotting rig where the family is stuck.

It is easy to think that humans are on top of the food chain right now, but how did we get there? Of course, we have nuclear weapons and all of that, but if you are stranded with nothing, would you still feel so powerful? Faced with a creature that is made to prey on targets bigger than you you realize how powerless humans are. Exploring such themes of how powerless we are in certain situations is what makes horror movies irreplaceable. It is important to be aware of such feelings so one can know what life actually is outside a certain comfort zone.
