Summoning demons doesnt make you cool, kids. Doing drugs, pirating films, and having unprotected premarital sex? Yes, those are all obviously very accepted methods of becoming cool but remember, trying to summon a demon lord down from hell to do your earthly bidding should only be done under the strict supervision of a fifth-degree Magus. Dont be a loserfer, demons are for dopes.
Someone should have told Kirk ( Kirk C. Johnson ) and Carlos ( Carlos Larotta ) in Chris McInroys We Summoned A Demon, as we open on this hapless duo engaged in what initially appears to be a botched rooster sacrifice to turn Kirk cool enough to impress Brenda. Things take an unexpected turn when they come face to face with the evil theyve invited and have to find a way to send it back where it came from. We Summoned A Demon is a hell of a ride (pun intended) from start to finish and McInroys snappy dialog is brought to life through Johnson and Larotta, who have the chemistry and knack for absurd slapstick of a modern Laurel and Hardy. The visuals and costuming feel pulled straight out of a B-grade 80s exploitation film to the point where I expected Brenda to arrive at any moment played by Linnea Quigley. Sadly, that doesnt happen but I wont hold it against them too much (seriously though, get Linnea on board for the sequel). The effects are mostly practical outside of the demons glowing eyes and we get some great gratuitous gore. The costuming for the demon finds a nice balance between silly and scary with a high-end zombie mask and gloves with a regular hoodie covering the rest of his body because full body suits are expensive and nothing else takes itself seriously so why start now?
Managing to fit more laughs and thrills into 6 minutes than many feature-length films Ive reviewed and makes me seriously considering trying to get me a demon of my own. You see, this is how it starts. Say no to demons; instead, live vicarious by saying yes to We Summoned A Demon.
