Saggy breasts have never looked as beautiful as they did in The Weight of It, a beautifully written and artistically executed stop-motion animated short movie.

Created and animated by Sandra Afonso Rodriguez, Einar Solero Fernandez, and Olivia Maria Valdez, The Weight of It tells the short story of an elderly woman. As she undresses for the evening, she appraises herself in the mirror, particularly her breasts, which show the scars of surgery and ravages of time. As she ruminates on the bitter happenings of life, a gentle reminder shows her that getting older can be sweet as well.

The Weight of It was a micro movie, playing out over only a few minutes, but within those few minutes, a lifetime of stories was told. The movie had no dialogue, only relying on sighs and giggles as auditory expressions. The creators of the movie did an excellent job of showing without telling. The claymation characters in The Weight of It were surprisingly expressive, shedding large tears as well as cracking big smiles to convey the emotional messages within the film.

The Weight of It told a heartfelt story, giving the audience a vulnerable and relatable character to emotionally attach to and feel the pain of disliking the reflection in the mirror. With the introduction of the husband character, the movie goes from sadness to gladness in an instant, offering a new perspective on self-acceptance as well as some comedic relief to the movie. The Weight of It was over too soon; I really enjoyed the characters and appreciated the creators showing both the challenges and blessings that come with aging.

The Weight of It was a look into an intimate moment — a short journey overcoming insecurity and relishing love and acceptance. The animation was simple, but the character designs were cute nonetheless. Furthermore, the movie was highly effective in getting its message across without being too sappy or obviously motivational. I enjoyed this bittersweet story, and I commend the creators for successfully putting together a short story using the daunting medium of claymation.
