“There’s a strange, new world out there and you’re only touching the tip of the iceberg.” –Nick Moon, P.I.

Nick Moon (Khristian Fulmer) is a Paranormal Investigator in a secret world full of demons and other sorts of ghouls, with whom he holds a sort of truce as long as they behave themselves. His secretary/partner Daisy (Erin Lilley) has only a seemingly useless empathic power, but Moon is armed with mystical weaponry and protections, and one portal spell. The film sees him hired to find a lost artifact, a strange dagger with electrical properties. But it turns out the dagger is more important than anyone knows, and the beautiful woman who hired him may have a hidden agenda.

At the same time, someone is grotesquely murdering and dismembering demons, leaving the corpses behind to be found by mortal police. Fortunately, Moon knows a detective that helps keep their existence covered up. It soon begins to look like this string of murders is connected to his case.

And when Moon’s former partner The Stranger (Eric C. Schmitz) makes an appearance, everything he thought he knew about this case gets upended fast.

Night Hunters (also called Demon Squad on imdb) is a low-budget and amateurish film, but remember that the root of “amateur” is amat — “he loves” in Latin. It seems like it was fun to make, and some of the monster designs and concepts are interesting, though they suffer from closeups or bright sunlight. Despite direct-to-video cinematography and CG effects that seem weak and dated to a 2019 audience, as well as sets that are probably just the dressed apartments of people associated with the film, Night Hunters tries for a

supernatural noir vibe, and falls just short of camp.

The acting is uneven but serviceable, and the eternal sidekick, Daisy really makes this film for me, the best-acted and most interesting character. Moon’s hat makes me laugh. Noir detectives are supposed to know how to wear a fedora.

All-in-all this movie is fun but leaves nothing behind. Probably it was a blast to make, and it would be wise to keep an eye on Thomas Smith, because his next feature may just be a doozy.
