A young couple make love in their bedroom, the sounds of their passion filling the house. Unbeknownst to them, another man has broken into their home and is slowly making his way upstairs to where they are vigorously entwined. He steps into the room and just watches them for a moment. The suspense, even for just a second, is terrible. And then he speaks to them. And then he attacks.

Deadly Virtues: Love. Honour. Obey. (which might win the award for most awkward movie title this year) is a home invasion movie that delivers the goods, and then some, along with some mighty fine acting and a decent little twist.

Tom and Alison (Matt Barber and Megan Maczko) are the couple who find their lives turned upside-down by the stranger Aaron (Edward Akrout) and all three of them are very good and natural in their roles. Aaron is as charming and smooth as they come, taking over the couple’s life in order to create his own happy and loving “marriage,” and will do anything necessary in order to turn Alison into his blushing bride.  Tom, unfortunately, is tied up in the bathtub and forced to pay the price for Alison’s every mistake.  In lesser hands, this kind of back-and-forth could quickly become tiresome, but director Ate de Jong (Drop Dead Fred)(yes, that Drop Dead Fred) strings us along masterfully, doling out bits and pieces of information amidst intense bloody violence, and then reeling it back in and keeping us hooked on his line until the very end.

That ending, unfortunately, could have used some work. I see where they were headed, and I get what they wanted it to be, but the last 15 minutes or so seems a bit rushed and scattered (and, well, kind of lazy and convenient writing). I like the way they revealed Aaron’s way of choosing his victims, it was clever and a little chilling and completely believable.

This is a fun little thriller with a weird BDSM slant to it (let’s just say Aaron really knows what he’s doing when he ties knots) and it’s definitely worth your time. Uncle Mike sez check it out, and don’t bother locking your doors. It won’t stop him.
