On a weekend getaway at a rundown cottage in the woods a precautious 14-year-old teen, his crude best friend, and his best friends fearless older sister will have to grow up, work together, and save their hard-partying parents from their predatory cabin neighbor intent on feeding them all to her undead family.

Dead Shack  feels right out of the 1980’s sub-genre of the kids against the monsters. Featuring a primarily synthesizer score composed by the director Peter Ricq‘s own indie-electronic duo, Humans, the feel similar in many ways to the hit Netflix show Stranger Things. It strikes good balance of humor and horror with spot on performances from the cast. Notable standouts being Lizzie Boys and Gabriel LaBelle as brother and sister Summer and Colin. Donavon Stinson also makes a strong showing as their childlike father. Matthew Nelson-MahoodValerie Tian, and Lauren Holly round out the cast. The film is funny, gory, and nostalgic. I had a great time. Dead Shack is currently playing at the 2017 Fantasia International Film Festival and will be released wider this October.
