“On April 4, 1968, the body of a 13-year old boy was found dead in the quiet town of Springwood, OH. For the next five years, a child killer labeled “The Springwood Slasher” by the press would claim the lives of 20 children.”

This haunting line opens The Confession of Fred Krueger, a 30-minute Youtube film written and directed by Nathan Thomas Milliner. Springwood Police have just arrested the man they think is responsible for these child murders. As the interview continues, Krueger meticulously details the horrors that he brought upon this sleepy little town. This is the prequel you never knew you needed. If you thought Freddy Krueger was scary as a dream demon, wait until you see him as the human.

The film just debuted this past weekend at HorrorHound, and Milliner has just released it via YouTube. We have the video linked below for you to watch now!

Kevin Roach plays Krueger beautifully. He is dark, creepy, yet eerily charming. He develops Krueger in his style, yet keeps Englund’s version there the whole time. From the moment he walks in wearing the iconic part one sweater and fedora to the scene at the end of the credits–he’s Fred Krueger inside and out. Another standout is the music, crafted by Lito Velasco. Harkening back to the haunting original theme, he is inspired by it but makes it his own, perfectly complimenting the film. The first time I heard it during the opening credits, I felt goosebumps on my arm. And his original work would have fit perfectly into the original A Nightmare on Elm Street. Finally, the color used in the flashbacks is that of studio film. Krueger is cast in darkness, in black-and-white, but children are in full color. And the color often matched the tone of the scene. It’s little details like this that add to overall quality of the film. It is easy to tell this is a passion project for Milliner and his team.

Milliner pays homage to this classic icon without cheapening Krueger’s appeal. This is the closest we are going to get to a quality re-imagining of the Elm Street franchise. Do yourself a favor and go watch it on YouTube now and then share it with every Fred-head you know!
