Today at ScareLA Knott’s Berry Farm, the original haunted theme park experience, announced major plans for this years upcoming Knott’s Scary Farm. In its 43th year Knotts will introduce an all-new maze, The Dead of Winter, the evolution of the popular zombie shooting experience in Special Ops: Patient Zero, and the triumphant return of Elvira Mistress of the dark in an all-new stage show, Elvira’s Asylum. The notorious event returns for 24 horrifying nights September 24 – October 31 and features endless mazes, wall to wall terror and a thousand monsters lurking in the fog.

ScareLA 2015 - Knott's Scary Farm Panel 2D Complete

Knott’s Scary Farm, the largest, most haunted experience in Southern California, has unveiled a new spine-chilling maze for its 43rd annual event, The Dead of Winter. New for 2015, escape the icy grasp of the chilling Snow Queen in the The Dead of Winter. Backed up with a ravenous beastly army of resurrected Viking warriors, she is hellbent on avenging her beloved family’s murder, and preys upon any unsuspecting visitors who foolishly enter the borders of her icy domain.

Maze designer Gus Krueger spoke exclusively with HorrorBuzz on his new creation and gave us a tour of the progress.  The obvious question here is, “Frozen?” “Gus dryly quipped, “My queen don’t sing.”  after laughing about that he actually got serious about it and pointedly said, “Honestly it has about as much to do with the Disney version of the original story as say Pinocchio Unstrung does.”

In Gus’ version of the snow queen story, the Snow Queen is taking vengeance on the village below with her army of undead vikings. Taking place inside the Boardwalk Ballroom, They will be able to greatly control the environment, keeping things frigid and, at times, down right freezing. “At one point in the experience guests will be lost in the midst of a nordic forest as snow falls from the sky.” This is really involved stuff and very real, gritty, a lot like Krueger’s other creation, Gunslinger’s Grave.  But we will get to that in a minute.

The Dead Of Winter | Knott's Scary Farm 2015 New Maze

We entered the Boardwalk Ballroom and it was apparent that Trapped was not returning.  In the large space that was once the dance floor now stood pristine pine flats, carved archways and labyrinthian corners.  The maze will use the former waiting area for Trapped as the queue, so, the upside is air conditioned queue.  Guests will have the option of entering, or experiencing an all-new Skeleton Key Room for this maze. “People are going to go through all kinds of environments here.” Gus said. “They will be in a village that was taken over by ice and undead vikings, they will wander in a snowy forest, they will plumb the depths of the icy catacombs, and even encounter an icy lake filled with frozen victims of the queen’s wrath.”

Eventually visitors will encounter the Snow Queen herself and have to escape with their lives.  But for now they are fast at work creating all of these icy environs.  We are really excited to see how this new maze turns out.

The Gunslinger’s Grave BLOOD MOON RISES

Knott’s Berry Farm also announced updates to the already gritty and intense Gunslinger maze by adding a supernatural bend to things this time around.

Deadly howls and a full blood moon mark your impending doom as Werewolves take over the crime stricken town, in the return of Gunslinger’s Grave: A Blood Moon Rises.

“This year we wanted to add another layer of craziness to Gunslinger’s and evolve the story” said Kruger. The clues of this eventual change in the story were there all along, but few ever really picked up on it. “Remember there was a wolf in the barn scene?” Gus reminds us, “Now you know why.”

All visitors will now pass through the previous Skeleton Key Room and then wander through the rest of the maze. “No Skeleton Key Room for Gunslinger’s this year.” Gus confirmed.  Next hapless visitors will find that the cavern scene has been infested by lycanthropes and are now attacking the town. We pointed out that this town has had a really bad run and asked why the Gunslinger insists on sticking around. “Well, he’s just put down his roots, he’s kind of settled.”

The maze will culminate in penetrating the werewolf fortress. “The ending will be completely redone” Gus assured.

These two mazes promise to be very exciting to say the least.  Good luck to the Knott’s crew and Gus, we know you will pull it off.

I was very sad to learn Trapped will not be returning this year. I’d be really interested to hear all of the factors that went into that decision. As much as a large portion of the fan base were upset about the upcharge maze, it was definitely something very special. I hope they reconsider and have it return in some form in the future!

Blood Moon Rises looks like a much needed refresh to the somewhat stale Gunslinger’s Grave. I’ve reserved judgement on The Dead of Winter, hopefully Gus has a hit on his hands! Sept 24 can’t get here soon enough!

I think they may be toying with us a little. The rumour for trapped that I had heard was they were going with an escape room, which I thought was an awful idea. I think that maybe they realized it was going to be a bad idea and shifted gears.

I am really happy TRAPPED isnt coming back. I paid for the 2nd year and was extremely disappointed.

I know I sent Knott’s an email asking for them to take out trapped among other things. I reasoned that since trapped began in 2012 the park has fallen down in ratings. The 2014 HHN was rated #1 in world:

    http://www.themeparkinsider.com/flume/201410/4244/

    Knott’s fell to #8. In 2005 & 2007 Knott’s haunt was #1 in the world.

I talked about virtually all other theme parks don’t charge more for a certain maze. Ratings have fallen since trapped has come in 2012. The theory is if you charge more for a maze then more work is going to be focused on that maze. Therefore, the other mazes suffer more. The ratings drop supports this as well. I never went to trapped unless they dropped the extra charge due to the principal.

Don’t hate me too much since. Literally, 2-4 weeks after I emailed Knott’s last year about doing a haunt pass they started doing it.

Granted could be coincidence but consider these facts:

    1. Knott’s has never had a haunt pass for over the 40 years of doing haunt since 1973.
    2. I never sent an email to Knott’s until 2014 & 2015.
3.. Again, literally 2-4 weeks after I sent my first email ever to Knott’s about a haunt pass they come out with them. ;)

Not trying to knock you, but a marketing team doesn’t come up with something in just two weeks. People have been begging for haunt pass for years.

And I don’t think Trapped was the reason for the fall. It was many things, not decking out the park in Halloween dress, the awful, low capacity Speial Ops, less mazes, letting a few mazes get to long in the tooth (Clown maze and Los muertos maze) Less shows. Remember, the people in charge of haunt have to answer to park management, who intern have to answer to the people in Ohio.

Perhaps I was part of the minority. It just seemed like every other maze at Knott’s, Universal, et al. was the same ol’ flats and sets with actors going for the jump scare. We know the theme and some of the story ahead of time. Sometimes we even know what some of the bigger scenes are. Not so with Trapped.

Trapped was something different. It was a personal experience where you were the star of the show. On top of that, not knowing ANYTHING about the experience except for the title, made for some of the most fun I’ve ever had at a theme park. With each year being different, there was only so much you could count on content-wise from year to year.

I’ll definitely agree that Year 2 was NOT up to par, it was an attempt to cash in on the popularity of the first year (they created an additional “track” to ensure more guests could go through, but it failed miserably). Year 3, however, was on par, and arguably even better than Year 1.

During the panel yesterday, Jeff’s main point on why it wasn’t returning was that there are more escape rooms/interactive haunts in Southern California now than ever before. He said that they didn’t feel that they could compete on their level since they also have 10 other mazes that need to be completed. I’m sure there were additional reasons that the public isn’t privy too, and as I mentioned above, I’d love to know what those reasons were.

I still love Knott’s and it will continue to be my favorite Haunt, but it’ll be a little less exciting without Trapped.

Problem with Trapped that most if not all are taking into account. Liability issues. When you can touch the people entering even with a signed waiver. There’s bound to be a few that still try to sue. Then, Knott’s has to pay lawyers to show up to court. Trapped was the only maze where the monsters were allowed some touching. Liability issue is huge. Anyone that’s a huge fan of Knott’s should want a maze with touching allowed, gone ASAP.

    • Austin August 11, 2015 at 2:20 pm

Was that really an issue? Did they really ever get sued? I’m not trying to be facetious, I’m genuinely curious.

In all the 3 years that I did Trapped, NEVER did I feel like there was an actor even CLOSE to crossing a line as far as personal space or general comfort goes. It was all in good fun and from what I could tell, the actors understood that. Hell, we even got stuck in one of the rooms after a technical issue and my group thought it was part of the show and the actor had to break character and tell us it was broken. He then proceeded to chat with us about his evening and he was all around a good guy. I’m not saying there aren’t liability issues, but Knott’s generally hires a great group of people to participate in Haunt and from what I understand, the hiring process for Trapped was especially challenging and stringent.

All I can say is Knott’s is a business like any other.

Businesses are meant to make as much profit as possible.

Perhaps, final net sales for 2012-2014 Knott’s haunt fell? Not sure, but Cedar Fair corporate does.

If it were a fact that 2012-2014 haunt sales fell below pre-2012 levels. Then, its a very simple business decision. What we call a no brainer.

How certain on a scale of 1 out of 10? 10 being its toast? If a 10, maybe Knott’s will up charge on another maze just calling it another name than Trapped?
