The Game Awards doesn’t follow in the same vein as other awards shows. While it is hailed by some as “the Oscars of the video game industry,” it’s also so much more than that.

An annual celebration of video games. Presentations to honor both big and small creators within the industry. A massive showcase of upcoming games and related media.

Embedded within The Game Awards, is a huge opportunity for announcements for future video games. In the 2021 presentation were a huge slew of horror and horror-related games. Here, I would like to highlight some of these games that we can look forward to in the future, both near and further out.

Alan Wake 2, Remedy Entertainment

Coming through as Remedy’s first venture into the realm of survival-horror, this sequel to Alan Wake took tons of fans by surprise. The creative director of Remedy, Sam Lake, wrote in a PlayStation blog,

Whereas the first Alan Wake had horror elements in it, it was an action game. Alan Wake 2 is Remedy’s first survival horror game. Our take on the genre. Our opportunity to truly connect the gameplay and the story.

Alan Wake 2 will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via the Epic Games Store), and Xbox Series X in 2023.

Dying Light 2, Techland

Another highly anticipated sequel within the horror genre, Dying Light 2 was presented with another trailer, delving more into its story this time around.

Promoted with heavy emphasis on an open world game where the player’s choices will matter within the story, horror fans can definitely look forward to a terrifyingly immersive experience.

Dying Light 2 is scheduled to be released on February 4, 2022, for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Slitterhead, Keiichiro Toyama, creator of Silent Hill

This upcoming horror game might be developed by the same creator of such an iconic horror franchise, it seems to hold its own when compared to its predecessor. Instead of the slow-burn anticipation we’ve seen from Silent Hill, we see a much more fast-paced, intense experience.

Though some of the roots will remain the same, Slitterhead will also feature an all-original score from the Silent Hill composer, Akira Yamaoka.

While there is no release date for Slitterhead quite yet, we can expect to almost certainly hear more news about this highly-anticipated horror piece at some point in 2022. Hopefully.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Gun Media

In a brief announcement from the creators of Friday the 13th: The Game, the horror villain icon is making his debut in “a multiplayer horror game based on true events.”

In the words of Ronnie Hobbs, creative director of Gun Interactive,

“[…] nearly 50 years after the films’ release, the fact that myself, along with my colleagues at Gun Interactive and Sumo Digital Nottingham, are tasked with creating a proper video game based on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is surreal to say the least. This will be the first licensed game since 1983. And for a whole new generation, it will be their entry into the horror and macabre that left an impression on me so many years ago.”

No further details have been announced as of the time of writing.
