Who hasn’t watched a horror film, and thought to themselves “Wow, being the hulking killer would be a great video game!” Behaviour Interactive takes this concept, and makes it a reality in its fun, frantic, but sometimes flawed, game, Dead by Daylight.

The game features two teams; four survivors working together against one killer. The survivors need to repair five generators, located around one of three maps, in order to escape. The killer simply needs to find the survivors, and do what he does best. Of course, like most horror films, the odds are on the killer’s side, often making for a nerve-wracking experience all around.

The three environments (a run-down manor, a junkyard, and a farm) are pretty big, but thankfully, the generators are easy to spot for both killer and survivors. Repairing them is a long process, which takes even longer if you are doing it by yourself. They also trigger QTE which, if you fail, will cause the generator to backfire, and alert the killer to your presence.

As the killer, once you find someone (and you will), the survivors best bet is to run away. Sure, they can momentarily blind you with a flashlight, or throw pallets in your path to slow you down, but the traditional, ominous walk will keep you right on their tail, allowing you to eventually catch up and sacrifice them to the elder gods.

Survivors are alerted to a killer’s presence by their beating heart; the faster it beats, the closer the killer is. However, running away is complicated by birds, and other objects you touch. The killer can follow the trail, and be lead right to you if you are not careful.

The game is actually a lot of fun, and you can spend a few hours getting lost in it. A level up system is included for both sides, allowing you to equipment new costumes and abilities for either or. The three killers also already come with unique skill sets, so finding one that works best for you is ideal.

After a few hours, the stages and gameplay DOES become a little repetitive, but for a value title, it’s to be expected. There is also no way to get into a lobby with friends, so if you want to play with people you know, you’ll have to keep leaving lobbies until you are finally matched up with them.

That said, Dead by Daylight is a lot of mindless fun, and keeps you on your toes. My son and I played for hours, and I can’t even tell you how many times we yelled at the screen due to jump scares. It all depends on who you are matched up with. Sometimes the killer can easily get a flawless victory, while others they may be wandering around the map, aimlessly, not finding anyone.

Overall, it’s an enjoyable game and fun diversion from what we are used to.
