Back in 2010 Alan Wake took the gaming world by storm with innovative light-based action and an enthralling psychological thriller plot. It seemed inevitable that Remedy Studios would put out a sequel. After more than a decade Alan Wake 2 is finally officially on the way. The game was announced during this year’s Game Awards with a short teaser trailer that included a release year, if not an actual date.

The original Alan Wake was advertised as a psychological thriller, but fans have long debated whether it falls into the survival horror genre. It seems the sequel will be less nebulous as according to creative director Sam Wood, Alan Wake 2 will be Remedy’s “first ever survival horror game.” This means fans should expect more scares and less of an emphasis on action.

The game’s trailer didn’t give us much in the way of details, but it established the gritty, uneasy atmosphere of classic Alan Wake then ended with an abrupt jump scare. If the game manages to mix the tone of the original with its horror elements as well as the trailer did it could be a worthy sequel.

Alan Wake 2 is coming to PS5, X-Box Series X/S, and the Epic Games Store in 2023. More information will be released in Summer 2022. Fans who missed the original back in 2010 can pick up the remastered version released for PS4, PS5, X-Box One, X-Box Series X/S, and PC back in October.
