There are too many good scares in the way films were marketed during my childhood.

For instance the tagline for Alien (1979) was simply “In space no one can hear you scream”.  It sits with most of us still if you were young enough at that time, and that is why from time to time I am going to try and showcase some of the trailers, slogans and posters that made me truly terrified to walk into a movie theater.  But first a little background for some of our younger readers.

We had three networks on television back then, a handful of local channels, and if you really wanted to frustrate yourself trying to watch something  a whole second knob of television channels spaced very far apart, which never came in very clear, and always seemed to be trying to cram culture or knowledge down your throat as they rolled and ghosted their way into your living room each day.  And there were distinct times things happened.  Cartoons and children’s programming  relegated to early mornings, late afternoon, and Saturday mornings for the most part.  The rest of the time the television programming belonged to the adults. Meaning if you didn’t go to bed on time you were likely to see adds for all sort of things…
