The Z-Virus Episode 1: Bunker Fever

Let me start by saying the opening credits to The Z Virus are phenomenal. Everything from the photo stills to the music is spot on. I get very excited when I see opening credits like this because it means the world is going to be amazing.

The episode begins with Wilson waking up in a red lite bunker. He attempts to make contact with a doctor through a radio walkie but reaches no one. Cabin fever, or ‘Bunker Fever’ in this case, set in. He decides it is time to leave the confines of the bunker. He gives himself a small ‘pep talk’. After gearing up for the environment outside, Wilson braves the new outside world.

Once away from the safety of his bunker it doesn’t take long before he faces reality. Zombies begin to emerge and he must begin his fight for survival. When he fires the rifle I jumped because the sound is so loud and resonates, it feels like you are there. His second weapon of choice is a butcher’s cleaver and when it makes contact with the zombie’s neck it is beautiful. My ears were treated to a gruesome symphony of hacks, slices, and just pure flesh contact. I felt like I was there in person experiencing the kill.

After leaving the bloody scene he runs out of the building and encounters a scene. Two men, seem normal, are set on killing each other. Wilson realizes he is not alone and moves forward to warn them. As new characters are introduced we may get to know the Doctor and what he know about what is happening. I enjoyed the simplicity of the episode. We know enough to make an assumption to what is to come but not enough to have a definite answer. I am very much enjoying the series and hope to continue watching.
