Twin Peaks: The Return Part 5

In Las Vegas, Jake (Bill Tangradi) and Gene (Greg Vrotsos) are sitting in their car at night. Gene is on the phone to Loraine (Tammie Baird) informing her that Dougie’s car is still parked in front of the house in Rancho Rosa and he doesn’t appear to have ever come out. She is really upset because “this should have been taken care of yesterday.” BlackberryShe hangs up on Gene and pulls out a Blackberry. She nervously begins to call a pager sitting somewhere else in a bowl. When it answers she types the number 2.

In Buckhorn, Officer Talbot (Jane Adams) has completed the autopsy on the male body found in Ruth Davenport’s bed.  After making several bad head related puns she tells Detectives Macklay (Brent Briscoe) and Harrison (Bailey Chase) that the man had not eaten for days but she found a ring in his stomach. She suggests they start with the wife. Harrison notices an inscription. Talbot reads it “To Dougie with love, Janey-E.”

Whose body is that? Like I said previously I believe it’s got to be Major Briggs. But why he have Dougie’s ring in his stomach?

Cooper BOBBad Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) lies in his cell staring at the celling. Suddenly he says “And now, food is coming.” A moment later a guard carrying a tray of food walks to Bad Cooper’s cell and drops it off. Bad Cooper takes the food and then stares into the small mirror above his sink. He flashes back to the Black Lodge and sees Cooper’s doppelganger and BOB (Frank Silva) laughing manically over and over. He then flashes on himself slamming his head into the mirror in the bathroom of room 315 at The Great Northern. As he stares in the mirror he can see BOB’s face along with his own and is relieved to see that BOB is still there.

Before Bad Cooper stares into the mirror he washes his hands.  Compulsive hand washing seems to be a trait of BOB.

Mike Nelson (Gary Hershberger) sits in his office and calls for Steven Burnett (Caleb Landry Jones) to come into his office. He proceeds to tell him that his is the worst resume he’s ever seen and that not only would he never hire him, he would never recommend for work anywhere else. He then throws him out.

Yay! It’s Mike! I’m not surprised that he runs a used car dealership.

At the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Frank Truman (Robert Forster) is on the phone with his brother Harry. Lucy calls on the intercom to let him know his wife is looking for him and she’s coming his way. He says goodbye to Harry just as his wife Doris (Candy Clark) bursts into the room. She proceeds to berate him about Dwight’s diarrhea, leaky pipes and her dad’s questionable car. He assures her the leaky pipe will be fixed tomorrow and the car is fine. She yells at him that he’s impossible and storms out.

Who’s Dwight? Is it their dog? How did he get up in the upper cupboard?

At Dougie’s house, Janey-E (Naomi Watts) is dragging Cooper out of the house. She tells him that she hid the money in their secret place and she counted it. There is $425,000. She tells him that when he gets to work he needs to call “them” and pay the $50,000 they owe and then they will be free and clear. Realizing Dougie’s car isn’t there she tells him to get in the car and she will take him.

The whole time Janey-E is talking to Coop he stares at Sonny Jim (Pierce Gagnon) and a tear rolls down his cheek as if he is seeing his son for the first time.

Back at Rancho Rosa, Jake and Gene roll by the house to see that Dougie’s car is still there. A moment later a carload of thugs drive by and also check out Dougie’s car.

Janey-E pulls up in front of Dougie’s office. Cooper doesn’t get out. She tells him repeatedly to get out of the car and go to work. She wonders if he’s having another one of his episodes. He wanders aimlessly pausing at a statue of Coffee Coopgunslinger pointing his gun. Cooper imitates the gesture before continuing onward. He pauses again near a bank of elevators. A co-worker (Josh Fadem) of Dougie carrying a couple of trays of coffee tells him to hurry up because the meeting is starting soon. Cooper follows him like a lost puppy enticed by the smell of the coffee.

Phil, the co-worker, apologizes that he didn’t get Dougie a coffee because he didn’t know je was coming in today. He decides Cooper can have Frank’s since he never drinks his anyway and besides he has and green tea latte that Frank might like. Cooper caresses the cup as inhales the coffee moaning the whole time. Phil comments that it’s “Damn good joe.” Cooper repeats this phrase. Phil guides Cooper through the offices of Lucky 7 Insurance to the boardroom. On the way in Cooper is greeted by Anthony Sinclair (Tom Sizemore.) Sinclair comments on Cooper’s hair being different before pulling him close to whisper that he covered for his ass.

Dougie’s co-worker’s all sit around the table waiting for the meeting to start. Frank (Bob Stephenson) notices Cooper drinking his coffee. Phil offers him the Green Tea Latte. Frank first refuses then reluctantly agrees to take it and ultimately likes it. Dougie’s boss Bushnell Mullins (Don Murray) tells Dougie to sit down. Sinclair starts the meeting by mentioning a couple of claims from the previous week that will need to be paid out including one that have been originally ruled arson. Sinclair tells Mullins that it legitimates and as he says this a green light appears on his face. Cooper blurts out “He’s lying.” Sinclair takes great offense to Cooper’s accusation. Mullins asks Cooper for clarification. When Cooper doesn’t respond Mullins tells him he wants to see him in his office following the meeting.

What was the green light? Was it from the lodge? When he calls Sinclair a liar it’s a rare time that he has said something that was repeating what someone else had said.

Phil and another co-worker physically escort Cooper into Mullins office. Mullins is unsure what to make of Cooper’s behavior and his gall in calling his best agent a liar. Cooper responds to the word agent and repeats it. Mullins gives him a stack of casefiles to take home and what he does with them will determine his future there.

Behind Mullins desk is a large framed poster advertising a boxing match from Mullins’ younger days as a fighter. It constantly feels that these keywords (coffee, agent casefiles, etc) keep getting close to snapping Coop back to his old self. As if he were in a hypnotic state and one of these words will get him out.

Out in the hall Cooper is once again stymied by the urge to pee. Rhonda (Elena Satine,) a co-worker from the meeting sees him and thinking the men’s room is locked, she offers to sneak him into the ladies room. Before letting him in however, she first stops to suggest she might let him kiss her now. But Cooper is about to burst. She lets him and soon you hear him moaning in great relief.

In the boardroom scene another co-worker, Darren (Wes Brown,) was being rebuffed by Rhonda who seemed to have no interest in a married man. But for Dougie I guess it’s a different story.

MItchum BrothersAt the Silver Mustang Casino Supervisor Burns (Brett Gelman) is waiting nervously as his bosses Rodney Mitchum (Robert Knepper) and Bradley Mitchum (Jim Belushi) are coming to see him. Rodney is angry that Cooper won 30 jackpots in a row. More jackpots than they usually pay out in a year. He accuses Burns of being in on it before proceeding to kick him repeatedly. When he finishes, Burns is helped to his feet and Rodney tells him he is fired. As he is escorted out by a pair of security guards, Bradley stops them so he can tell Burns to leave town and never come back. Bradley then tells Pit Boss Warrick (David Dastmalchian) that he now has Burns job. And he is to let them know if Cooper ever comes in there again.

Under Dougie’s car, the device sits still flashing. The young boy (Sawyer Shipman) from across the street stares at Exploded Carthe car through the window. With his junkie mom (Hailey Gates) passed out the boy heads outside and across the street to Dougie’s car.  He attempts to grab the device. But as he reaches for the carload of thugs return and chase him off. They break into the car and when they start it up the car explodes killing two of the four men. The other two take off as the boy returns home to his spot at the window to watch the car burn as his mother comes to.

Those car thieves are not very stealthy with the music blaring from their car.

Jade (Nafessa Williams) is getting her car washed. The attendant hands her Cooper’s Great Northern room key that he had left in her jeep. She shakes her head about it and drops it in a nearby mailbox.

I can’t wait to see what the reaction will be when Cooper’s key suddenly shows up at The Great Northern.

At the Double R diner in Twin Peaks, Norma Jennings (Peggy Lipton) is doing the diner’s books as she’s Shelly’s (Mädchen Amick) daughter Becky (Amanda Seyfried) come in. She watches them converse and Shelly hand Becky some money. When Becky leaves Norma goes over to Shelly behind the counter. The two of them watch through the window as Becky gets into the waiting car of Steven Burnett, the kid Mike threw out of his office earlier. Norma tells Shelly she needs to start helping Becky now before it starts getting hard.

So exciting to see the Double RR again! Shelly and Norma have both aged really well. Must be that cherry pie. Also caught a quick glimpse of Heidi (Andrea Hays) actually working a shift.

Becky gives Steven the money. He assures her he’s good for it and will pay her mom back. Noticing the uncomfortable gaze of Norma and Shelly, he starts the car and pulls away from the diner. He offers Becky some of the last of his cocaine. She’s concerned that he already done so much of it. He tells her he needed it because job interviews make him so nervous. They each do a hit and then drive off.

In the credits Becky is listed as Becky Burnett so it would seem that she and Steven are married but I’m not clear if they are secretly married or not. I thought Shelly referred to him just as the guy Becky was seeing. But I could be wrong.

Cooper StatueThe work day is over and Cooper is in a loaded elevator heading downstairs. He is in front of the door and he has to be pushed out when the elevator arrive at the lobby. Outside, Cooper stops and stares at the gunslinger statue again for hours. He closely examines his pants and shoes.

Andy (Harry Goaz) and Hawk (Michael Horse) continue to pour through the case files looking for clues. Andy asks Hawk if he has found any Indians because he has not. Hawk replies “No.”

At 7:00pm Dr. Jacoby (Russ Tamblyn) starts his crazy video podcast as his alter ego, Dr. Amp. Jacoby carries on angry rant about corporate conspiracies and crazy things. Two members of his audience are watching from Twin Peaks: Jerry Horne (David Patrick Kelly) out in the woods and Nadine Hurley (Wendy Robie) at home. He then goes to a pre-recorded commercial for the gold painted “shit-digging shovels” we saw him painting earlier.

What has happened to Dr. Jacoby? He used to be so chill. Is he really like this now or is it all just a way to sell shovels.  The commercial was great it felt so authentic. And it figures that Nadine would part of his audience. Where did he get the name Dr. Amp?

In Washington at the Pentagon, Lieutenant Cynthia Cox (Adele René) enters the office of Colonel Davis (Ernie Hudson) to inform him that they have received another database hit on prints for Major Garland Briggs. Col Davis asks how many this makes. She replies “sixteen.” He comments that this makes sixteen over twenty-five years. She tells it came from a police department in South Dakota. He figures it’s a wild goose chase like the others but if it ends being real they have to alert the FBI.

I knew it was Major Briggs’ body! I said it last week!

At the Roadhouse, Trouble, featuring David Lynch’s son Riley Lynch, is playing on stage. Richard Horne (Eamon Farren) is sitting alone in a booth smoking next to a no smoking sign. He’s asked to put the cigarette out but he refuses. Deputy Chad Broxford (John Pirruccello) walks over and says he’ll take care of this. He asks Richard for a cigarette and Richard gives the whole pack telling him to keep. As the Deputy walks away he opens the pack to verify it has the money he was to collect inside. At the table next Richard four girls keep checking him out. One of them, Charlotte (Grace Victoria Cox,) goes over and asks for a light. He tells her to sit down and she does beside him. Unexpectedly, he grabs her and pulls her tight against him asking her name and if she wants to fuck him. He closes his hand around her neck and says he’s going to laugh when he fucks her.

Riley looks just like his Dad. I still hate Deputy Chad. Who is Richard Horne? He feels like a reincarnation of Frank Booth from Blue Velvet. Could he be Audrey’s son? Where is Audrey?

Tamara Preseton (Chrysta Bell) is looking through Bad Cooper’s arrest file. She compares his fingerprints with Cooper’s on file prints. She seems to notice something odd. Meanwhile Bad Cooper has been taking into a room at the prison and given a phone to make his one phone call. The warden (James Morrison) makes sure all is ready to record the call. Bad Cooper asks who he should call. Should he call Mr. Strawberry? He decides no because he doesn’t think he’s taking calls. He then announces that he knows who he’ll call. Bad Cooper frantically dials several long series of numbers into the phone and suddenly alarms begin going off and lights begin to flash. As this is all going on Bad Cooper speaks into the phone the phrase “The cow jumped over the moon.”

Who is Mr. Strawberry? The way the warden reacts could it an imaginary friend he had as a child? If so, how would anyone else know about that?

At the end of the episode the pager in the bowl is seen once again. But this time we see it is in a large covered space in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It beeps twice and then implodes into a small piece of metal. Back outside of Dougie’s work, Cooper is still standing at the statue touching the figure’s shoes as a guard comes by to tell him there’s no loitering and he needs to move along.

Final Thoughts

We’re still earlier in the show so of course it’s still going to be creating more questions than it answers but at the same time it feels as if more of the pieces are starting to come together. Also I will never getting tired of seeing the old familiar faces and places pop up and I continue to look forward to what else is to come.

Join me here each week during the season for recaps and discussion of every episode. Twin Peaks airs Sundays at 9 pm on Showtime.
