Gameplay

Named suitingly, Morbid is exactly what it seems – a morbid, dark, twisted souls-like. The combat, while simple in playing, suits the style of the game in a way that ties it all together. However, the combat is certainly not the high points of this horrorpunk game. Stamina-based combat paired beneficial weapons makes combat shallow, but certainly not easy. Throw too many blows to the enemy, and your stamina drains quickly. Using your blocking, parrying, and painfully slow dodging will ease the missions, however.

Pros

The top-down perspective and pixelated graphics bring a fresh take on the genre, while the dark and gloomy atmosphere fits perfectly into the hellish plotline. Grotesque enemies fill the world, with gross amounts of blood making the fine details ironically come to life.

Fighting each of the bosses, the Acolytes, progresses the story and unveils more of the history of how they came to be. This provides a fulfilling venture for the player, making each defeat all the more satisfying.

Cons

The combat, however, would have to be the biggest drawback. While it does get easier as the player moves on, finding more weapons and runes to make each swing all the more effective, it’s almost painfully slowgoing. This is understandable, however, and fits flawlessly into the sub-genre the game’s built to fill in.
