A desperate mother hides her dying son in a secluded cabin to heal him using unnerving natural remedies.

A mother would do anything to care for, protect and save her children. But who saves a mother from stress, paranoia and insanity?

Remedy (2019) tells the story of how Grace Murray (Charlotte Bjornbak), a single mother of two, desperately hides her youngest son in a cabin in the woods from the hands of doctors. Cole Murray (Frank Seed), the youngest son, has a terminal illness, to which his mother is dealing with alternative and homemade natural remedies. At the same time, Travis Murray (Sam Bixby), the eldest son, disagrees with the way his brother is being treated and insists that he be taken with doctors so experts can do something about it, since they have passed four months since Cole began to show symptoms.

Remedy is the best analogy that can exist, in recent times, due to the trend against vaccination campaigns. However, it is also a double-edged sword because of the context in which the story unfolds; the mother could be going through a clinical picture of paranoia caused by the anguish she’s leaving because of her son’s illness. There are several scenes through the short film that show images which can only be explained by the mother’s current mental health situation. Grace keeps “I am his mother and I know what’s best for him” is one of the lines that Grace speaks that doesn’t seem to resonate as a practice-what-you-preach mantra.

Now, taking into account the cinematography of the short, it has to be mentioned that everything in Remedy is exquisite: the story is controversial, the dialogue is not premeditated, the performances are natural, the lighting is suitable for a bleak effect, the angles are ideal for the interpretation of the scenes. It’s a very well thought short produced by the Azusa Pacific University.

Remedy depicts every mother’s nightmare; living helplessly to save your child’s life. However, 22 minutes later, the short ends after a collection of decisions have been made, decisions that will be considered as bad choices but another group of people will agree to disagree.

About the Author

Brandon Henry was born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, just south of the border of San Diego. His birthplace is the main reason nothing really scares him (kidding… it’s a very safe place). His love for horror films came when his parents accidentally took him to watch Scream, at the age of 6, thinking that it was a safe-choice because it starred “that girl from Friends”. At 12, he experienced the first of many paranormal events in his life. While he waits to be possessed by the spirit of a satanic mechanic, he works as a Safety Engineer and enjoys going to the theater, watching movies and falling asleep while reading a book.
