When Universal Studios Hollywood announced that they were creating an all-new light projection show that focused on the darker side of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, we were more than intrigued. Dark Arts at Hogwarts™ Castle debuted last night during a lavish two-night Premiere Event and we were fortunate enough to attend. We can easily say that this new show is easily the most impressive Hogwarts Castle show to date that ups the ante considerably with refined technical wizardry, stunning immersive effects, and of course, the Dark Arts. Oh and here is the kicker. If you want to see this before it is shown to the public, you still have a chance to buy tickets to the next performance tomorrow night, Friday, April 12th.

The evening event began with a catered feast in Universal Plaza. As the rest of the park closed down around us, we dined on tasty vittles including herb crusted chicken, Yukon gold mashed potatoes, salmon, and prime rib. Beverages were included, however, the drinks were extra. As night descended we were invited intoHogsmeade™ village, where we explored the shops and experience the land’s signature rides, “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™” and “Flight of the Hippogriff™.”

It was getting darker still and the snow-capped peaks of Hogsmeade glittered in a strangely ominous azure. We took our places in front of Hogwarts and it was soon time for the event’s main attraction, the all-new Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle. Beginning with a warning from Dumbledore the show we are reminded that the dark magic is deceptively powerful. Then it is unleashed.

Dementors™, Death Eaters and other unspeakable creatures from Aragog and Mountain Trolls to Thestrals  cloaked the castle with sinister images from the darker side of magic and we were in a state of awe. Crystal clear imagery meticulously mapped the detailed surface of Hogwarts creating illusions of depth and dimension that have not been as successfully achieved until now. The clearer projections, mixed with immersive fire, lighting, and fog effects were simply amazing. Not to spoil things, but we even get a visit from our old pal Lord Voldemort™ himself.

We will seriously be coming back to see the show again, multiple times, as this was not only impressive but right up our alley. Congratulations to the Universal Entertainment team on a truly impressive piece of showmanship.

At Universal’s request, we will not be posting the full video of the show until after it has opened to the general public.

The event allowed for time to stroll through the shops and explore the area without having to navigate heavy crowds. Butterbeer flowed freely in all forms as part of the event and we had more than our fair share. Fans also got a chance to buy was a brand new wand that debuted in conjunction with the exclusive event, along with limited edition memorabilia.

So, if a premium night out and a first look at the all-new show sounds good to you, tickets are still available for Friday night’s event here.

Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle opens to the public on Saturday, April 13 and will continue through Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Universal Studios Hollywood then return from May 25 – 27.
