We at HorrorBuzz love horror. That is kind of a forgone conclusion. We also love supporting horror in its many forms, be it haunts that you can attend, games you can play, and movies that you can see. Independent horror in these mediums deserves very special attention. Today we focus on indie horror filmmaking and a particular project called Follow the leader.

Synopsis
Three characters lose their senses of sight, hearing and speech. After waking up in an abandoned mall, they realize they are not alone.

Not backed by deep-pocketed studios or production houses, indie horror is forged from the sheer will of those creating it. Razor-thin budgets get stretched so that every penny is visible on the screen or page. Collaborating with , writer Josh Doke, cinematographer Iain Trimble, and editor Ed Schroer, as well as producer J.S. Hampton, Follow The Leader will be our feature film debut by The Burghart Brothers – Jacob and Ben. They have been filmmakers since they were 10 and 8 years old growing up on a farm in Offerle, Kansas.  Inspired by the likes of  Twilight Zone, Hitchcock, Sam Raimi, they are driven by movies that are innovative and made with style and energy.

Director’s Statement
With Follow The Leader, we’re going for something fresh. We love horror movies, but honestly, sometimes we feel like we’ve seen them all. We as filmmakers are trying to strip back the voyeuristic nature of the horror film and place the audience behind the eyes of the characters, only entering into these first-person views periodically throughout the duration of the film in order to better relate to their struggles. When the perspective shifts, we’re not going for the shaky, found footage style.

Our generation is obsessed with nostalgia, and that’s why we wanted to set this movie in an abandoned 90s mall. We want the audience to re-experience the 90s as a surreal ghost. Horror is an incredible genre, with a huge fanbase and filmmakers pushing boundaries with creative new ideas all the time, and we’re excited to make this for fans of the genre.

If this looks like something you might want to be a part of, check out their Kickstarter page and think about donating to their project. Indie Horror is driven by the kindness and generosity of the fans that support it and these boys would certainly appreciate it. Put that money you won from betting on the Cubs last night to good use!
