MV5BODQ3Nzk1OTM1MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODcxNDg4OA@@._V1_UY268_CR12,0,182,268_AL_Girl in Woods follows the story of Grace (Juliet Reeves London), and her ill fated boyfriend Jim (Jeremy London). Jim plans a getaway in the woods, hoping to ask Grace to marry him. They newly engaged couple go on a hike in the woods and things rapidly fall apart. Grace begins her escalation into the deep depths of her mind, with the help of her Momma (Charisma Carpenter), from which she might not be able to escape.

As Grace tries to come to grips with her boyfriend/fiancee’s tragic accident she must try to keep herself whole long enough for her to find a way out of the woods. But as time progresses this becomes a challenge. Grace begins to unravel in a very disturbing manner.

From the start of the film I knew I was in for some eerie stuff. The music and the atmosphere of the movie was chill inducing. At the very beginning you feel off-center because Grace battles with her fast in the form of nightmares. At times the nightmares become confusing because we switch in and out from young Grace to older Grace but it all makes much more sense towards the end of the film.

Grace’s unraveling begins well into the beginning of the film. The nightmares begin the minute the film begins and this is the indication that something is not quite right with Grace. Her boyfriend Jim is very understanding of this fact, and is willing to put a ring on it. The moment he proposed to her was the moment I realized he is going to die because lets face it, happy ever afters do not exist in horror films. The happy couple has to struggle or die.

Grace’s descent into her primal self is very poetic. She struggles with her past, trying to come to grips with what happened. Her flashbacks to her childhood give insight to her upbringing and why she is the way she is. She also develops different personalities that help her survive the woods but her other selves seem to be doing more damage than good. When Grace talked to her other selfs it got confusing. All her personalities encapsulated a different part of her and at times I didn’t understand who was who. Was she the crazy Grace or was she the stable Grace? The camera perspective made it a challenge to identify them, but the personalities provided insight to how Grace was dealing with everything that was happening to her.

The film overall was intriguing in the aspect of the direction of the story. Grace continued her journey in the only way she knew how to. She could not escape her past, so she accepted it and embraced who she became. And boy did she transform into a survivor. If you like blood, body mutilation, cannibalism, and psychological thrillers then this is the film for you.
