Locke & Key was a wonderful comic book series, written by Joe Hill and drawn by Gabriel Rodríguez, that started in 2008 and ran until 2013. The story focused on the Locke family, as they moved into Keyhouse, their father’s childhood home, after his tragic murder. What follows was a clever and twisting story about the Locke’s legacy with the house, the mysterious keys scattered throughout, and the supernatural scares that awaited them.

I loved the books. So, I was thrilled when FOX announced in 2011 that they were filming a pilot based on the series. Unfortunately, they decided not to go ahead and buy a full series. Though they tried to shop it around to other networks, eventually, they let it die. Locke & Key fans were disappointed, because they really wanted to see the story adapted for the screen. With the death of the show, we thought it was never going to happen.

Until now.

IDW Entertainment announced earlier today that Locke & Key is being developed once again as a television series. Even better is that Joe Hill is back in the driver’s seat, writing the pilot and serving as an executive producer.

unnamed“I love this story,” said Hill. “The seven years I spent working on Locke & Key was the happiest creative experience of my life and there still isn’t a day when I don’t think about those characters and miss visiting with them. The six books of the series are very like six seasons of a cable TV series and so it feels only natural to bring that world to the little screen and to see if we can’t scare the pants off viewers everywhere.”

According to the press release issued earlier today, Ted Adams and David Ozer from IDW Entertainment, and David Alpert and Rick Jacobs from Circle of Confusion (The Walking Dead), will serve as executive producers along with Joe.

“Having Joe at the helm of the pilot ensures that the series will hold true to the brand that fans around the world have come to love,” said David Ozer, President of IDW Entertainment.

Unlike the first go round, IDW Entertainment is developing Locke & Key as a full series, so at the very least, we’ll be getting the first story arc out of it.

I really think this has huge potential to be something big. Comic book adaptations are clearly all the rage these days (The Walking Dead and Preacher are good examples) but Locke & Key brings something completely different into the mix. Stay tuned for more information as it develops.
