I absolutely love Stephen King’s novella The Mist. It’s short, but it is effectively creepy. When I was a kid, it kept me up late at night, hoping that the same thing wouldn’t happen in my town.

Which is why, in 1993, I fell in love with The Mist in 3D Sound audio book. It was one of the earliest uses of the 3D microphones, and listening to it in my bed, late at night, with my eyes closed, made it feel all the more real to me. I always thought it should be a movie.

Which is also why, in 2007, I fell in love with Frank Darabont’s feature adaptation of The Mist. It hit all the right notes, and added one hell of a gut punch for an ending. The film was even better on DVD, with the option to watch in black and white.

Which is why I have high hopes to fall in love with The Mist TV series.

Dimension TV announced today that it is adapting a series based on both the original novella and the film. The project also has King’s blessing, which is a big deal to me.

The show will be written by Christian Torpe, and tell an original story about the mist that creeps into a small town, and plunges it into terror. Of course, psychological scares and strange creatures will be abound!

Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of the Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, said “The terror and drama in Stephen King’s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth.”

I really, really, really (can you tell where I am going with this?) love this idea. With the way TV has been these days, this could be the perfect companion piece to the film. Perhaps tell the stories of some of the other folks trapped in the mist, away from the store? Either way, I’m excited to see how this develops.
